This is a brief introduction to one of our research projects—Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based smart alarming of tower crane hooks’ proximity．
Safety performance in construction industry is becoming more and more important these days. Accidents involving tower cranes can easily cause casualties when they happen. we must pay more attention to this even if related accidents have decreased recently. We set our goal at trying to decrease the risks that workers get struck by a tower crane hook or the loads it’s lifting.
Then we decided to build a system named Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-based smart alarming of tower crane hooks’ proximity which can tell the relative height between the crane hook and the ground automatically. With specific comparison algorithms, we can warn the workers when crane hooks come down from a higher position to some safety threshold, thus to make the works more alert and enhance their safety awareness.
Several designs were proposed and compared in terms of stability, safety, ease of deployment, and environmental sustainability. Then prototypes were built to validate whether they meet the requirements on deployment. A construction contractor—China Overseas Holdings Limited (COHL) is interested in our ideas and would like to cooperate with us to try out our prototypes. The system has been deployed on two sites of COHL from April, 2015 and is being continuously improved according to their feedback and suggestion.
